Course Details

Osteopathy is, worldwide, a long-established and well-respected area of complementary medicine. It is a "whole person" philosophy of medicine, where osteopaths endorse an approach that treats the entire person, rather than a specific complaint. Because the body is viewed as a single organism or unit, special focus is given to understanding body mechanics and the interrelationship of the body's components and systems. This understanding allows the osteopath to follow the dysfunctional chain that has led to the emergence of the symptom, and find and treat the cause of it. Apart from treating a broad range of conditions, attention is given to prevention, wellness, and helping the body to self-regulate in a more efficient way.

A particular emphasis is placed on the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathy is concerned with the manner in which the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system are integrated with the entire body physiology. By recognizing and addressing areas of tissue strain, stress or dysfunction, the abnormal neural, vascular and biochemical mechanisms can be treated.

Osteopaths utilize gentle physical manipulations of the bones, muscles, connective tissue, organs, blood vessels, lymphatics and nervous tissue. Osteopathic treatment can be prescribed in conjunction with or as an alternative to conventional treatments, drug therapies, and surgery to provide complete health care.

Skill development and exposure:
Clinical education is delivered through 150 hours of clinical practice in the first year and 600 hours of clinical practice in the second year. Students will be given progressively greater responsibility for the management and care of patients within the university clinic under supervision of osteopaths to equip them with the necessary skills required for practise after graduation.

Osteopathic Concepts, Criticality and Professionalism

This module enables students to develop a critical understanding of osteopathy as a modern healthcare profession. Building upon its history and founding principles, students will critically appraise its conceptual philosophy of healthcare, the key influencing factors for its development worldwide and its evidence-base. Whilst developing new knowledge and skills concerning osteopathy, students will be encouraged to draw upon their current professional practice to critically appraise the underpinning philosophy of different models of healthcare practice and that of osteopathy.

Methods of Enquiry for Osteopathic Practice and Research

Building upon ‘Osteopathic Concepts, Criticality and Professionalism’, this module enables students to develop advanced knowledge and skills in research methods and methodologies required to plan, design and implement a research or clinic audit project in the field of osteopathy. Moreover, it facilitates the students’ development as critically aware and reflective professionals who have an in-depth understanding of osteopathy and other healthcare systems required to inform their clinical decision-making process.

Developing Knowledge for Osteopathic Practice

This module enables students to develop and consolidate the knowledge of human structure, function and dysfunction. Building upon the knowledge and skills acquired during their previous pre-registration healthcare education and subsequent clinical practice, students develop their knowledge base to the level required for autonomous osteopathic practice. Problem-based learning activities provide students with an opportunity to develop their clinical reasoning capabilities by integrating osteopathic concepts with various forms of knowledge, including biomedical knowledge, pain processing and management, health psychology and nutrition.

This is the first of two modules that provides students with opportunities to develop osteopathic specific clinical knowledge and skills which will enable them to effectively evaluate and manage their patients. In this module, students will develop practical clinical skills of osteopathic evaluation and technique. Initially, problem-based learning activities provide students with an opportunity to integrate newly acquired knowledge and skills in the context of patient evaluation and care. Subsequently, students will have an opportunity to critically apply their developing osteopathic clinical capabilities under the guidance of clinic tutors in the modules Osteopathic Clinical Practice 1 and 2.

Osteopathic Clinical Practice 1

This module is the first of three practice-based modules undertaken in its entirety in the clinical setting. The clinical education on this masters’ program is designed to promote the consolidation and further development of osteopathic capabilities in patient evaluation and treatment and to support the development of a clinical competence profile which fulfils the requirements for autonomous osteopathic clinical practice. In order to promote the development of clinical competence, the students’ clinical education experience is progressive in nature and at different stages of the program the demands and responsibilities placed upon them change. In this module, students attend the university clinic and osteopathic practices as observers for a total of 50 hours. Students’ learning is promoted through observation of clinical tutors, osteopaths and senior students’ interactions with patients and one-to-one and group discussion on those observations and subsequent self-reflection. The managed and planned attendance to the clinics provides students with an opportunity to integrate their increasing theoretical and practical osteopathic capabilities and to develop a critically reflective and evidence-informed focus to their learning and clinical practice.

Osteopathic Clinical Practice 2

This module is the second of three practice-based modules undertaken in its entirety in the clinical setting. In order to promote the development of clinical competence, the students’ clinical education experience is progressive in nature and at different stages of the program the demands and responsibilities placed upon them change. In this module, students attend the university clinic for a total of 150 hours. Students’ learning is promoted through observation of clinical tutors and senior students’ interactions with patients as well as through their active participation in the process of patient evaluation and treatment. The managed and planned attendance to the clinics provides students with an opportunity to develop their osteopathic clinical reasoning capabilities as a means of consolidating their biomedical knowledge and theoretical and practical osteopathic capabilities and to further develop a critically reflective and evidence-informed focus to their learning and clinical practice.

Dissertation in Osteopathy

This module enables students to design and conduct a research project relevant to their osteopathy masters program. Building upon the research proposal submitted for assessment in the module ‘Methods of Enquiry for Osteopathic Practice and Research’, students will carry out a primary research or a systematic review project. Students are allocated a supervisor for the duration of the module and receive individual research supervision.

Clinical Skills for Osteopathic Practice 2

This is the second of two modules that provide students with opportunities to develop osteopathic specific clinical knowledge and skills which will enable them to effectively evaluate and manage their patients. To this end, students will consolidate practical clinical skills of osteopathic evaluation and soft tissue and muscle energy, mobilisation/articulation and HLVA technique; and will further develop their clinical skills in the areas of cranial, visceral and functional technique. Existing and newly acquired knowledge and skills are applied and integrated in their clinical practice through well-developed clinical reasoning capabilities. This is facilitated by means of classroom-based problem based learning activities and supervised clinical practice in the module Osteopathic Clinical Practice 3.

Osteopathic Clinical Practice 3

This module is the last of three practice-based modules undertaken in its entirety in the clinical setting. On completion of this module, students should be performing at a level equivalent to that of a newly qualified osteopath. Students attend the university clinics for a total of 600 hours over the course of trimesters IV, V and VI in year 2 of the program. Students are expected to demonstrate highly developed clinical reasoning as an expression of sound knowledge, skills and professional values and attitudes relevant for competent autonomous osteopathic practice.

    The program trains doctors in Osteopathic medicine (or osteopathy), a system of manual diagnosis and treatment for a range of musculoskeletal and non-musculoskeletal clinical conditions.
