A Dialogue in Brushstrokes: Exploring Fragility in Modern Life at Sri Sri University

May 6, 2024

By: Kuber Nayak

A captivating dialogue unfolded on the walls of Sri Sri University, Cuttack, Odisha, as the Fine Arts Club, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts, Communication and Indic Studies, presented a two-day exhibition (May 2nd & 3rd, 2024). This showcase wasn’t just a display of artwork; it was a poignant conversation between two final-year students, Sagarika Sarkar and Priyamwada Chettri, exploring the fragility of our existence in the modern world

Art Exhibition 2024

Sagarika Sarkar’s paintings take a deeply personal approach. With each masterful stroke, she unveils a haunting truth – the ephemerality of life in a society consumed by material possessions. Her works become symbolic landscapes, where objects we cling to may outlast us, ultimately becoming mere relics of a bygone era. This powerful juxtaposition invites viewers on a journey of introspection, forcing us to confront the fleeting nature of life and the things we hold dear.

Unveiling Societal Abduction:

Priyamwada Chettri’s artistic voice takes a different, yet equally thought-provoking, turn. Through her installations, she delves into the unsettling concept of societal abduction – the forceful appropriation of land and the subjugation of the female form. Her deeply allegorical imagery exposes the transformative nature of societal control, revealing a pervasive desire for domination. The stratified layers in Chettri’s work act as a poignant commentary, urging us to confront the consequences of social disfigurement on our connection to body, land, and time.

A Bridge Between Tradition and Modernity:

Both artists, while employing distinct styles and mediums, utilize allegory and symbolism to provoke contemplation and critique the ills of contemporary society. This exhibition serves as a testament to the progressive approach of Sri Sri University’s Fine Arts Department, as highlighted by Assistant Professor Tarak Nath Das. Here, students are encouraged to not only master traditional techniques but also embrace the power and relevance of modern and contemporary art practices.

The exhibition has garnered a remarkably positive response from visitors, furthering Sri Sri University’s commitment to raising awareness of contemporary art within the artistic landscape of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar.
