B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics

COURSE HIGHLIGHTS

B.Sc. (Hons.) Physics

Science and Technology are the best things our society has ever had. The needs and demands of the rapidly changing modern society drive the development of technology, and science is the backbone of every technology.

Physics is one of the fundamental science subjects. It plays a pivotal role in various areas of technological development vis-à-vis the progress of society. It also contributes to our understanding of other scientific disciplines. The unique course offering:

  • The Course follows a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines-Teaching is more student-centric rather than teacher-centric.
  • The campus is equipped with advanced experimental and computational labs. The curriculum is facilitated Software-Based Data Analysis for Physics experiments.
  • Develop the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom and laboratories to specific problems in theoretical and experimental Physics.
  • Expose the student to the vast scope of Physics as a theoretical and experimental science with applications in solving most of the problems in nature.
  • Emphasize the discipline of Physics to be the most important branch of science for pursuing interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary higher education and/or research in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary areas.

Course Details

  • The Course follows a Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines-Teaching is more student-centric rather than teacher-centric.
  • The campus is equipped with advanced experimental and computational labs. The curriculum is facilitated Software-Based Data Analysis for Physics experiments.
  • The UG Physics Lab. of SSU is a unique one. The lab. is operated beyond the scheduled hours to make the “learning while doing” a holistic process.
  • It is built to impart both pedagogical and technical training to contemporary UG Physics students and is, therefore, equipped with several sophisticated experimental set-ups (both PC and non-PC based), high-end data analysis software (Origin), and PCs.
  • All PCs are connected with high-speed internet. Many of the experimental set-ups are imported from the USA/Germany (Pasco/3B scientific) such as (a) Newton’s laws of motion (velocity, acceleration, momentum, conservation of energy/momentum), (b) Static and Kinetic friction, (c) Acceleration due to gravity, (d) Centripetal force, (e) Rollercoaster, (f) Projectile motion, and (g) Spring-mass system with various springs and masses. Several new experiments can be performed by combining them.
  • All the necessary software to perform the experiments are installed in all PCs to provide ample space and time to students in the lab.
  • Students will have opportunities for summer internship/research during the program and will be eligible for National Level M.Sc. Entrance Tests (IITs/IISERs/NITs/Central Universities etc.)
  • To understand the basic laws and explore the fundamental concepts of physics
  • To apply the theories learnt and the skills acquired to solve real time problems
  • To acquire a wide range of problem solving skills, analytical, technical and experimental and to apply them
  • To enhance the student’s academic abilities, personal qualities and transferable skills this will give them an opportunity in higher studies
  • To produce graduates who excel in the competencies and values required for leadership to serve a rapidly evolving global community
  • This course introduces students to the methods of experimental physics. Emphasis will be given on laboratory techniques specially the importance of accuracy of measurements
